Scientific Name: Sewellia lineolata
Common Names: Blue Tail Hillstream Loach, Reticulated Hillstream Loach, Gold Ring Hillstream Loach
Family: Balitoridae
Origin: Fast-flowing rivers and streams in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia
Size: 5–6 cm (2–2.4 inches)
Lifespan: 5–8 years with proper care

Small group (3–5 loaches): Minimum 20 gallons long (30x12x12 inches) for ample surface area and flow.
Larger groups: 30–40 gallons to support social behavior and water stability.
Tank Setup:
Substrate: Smooth river rocks, pebbles, or fine gravel to mimic their natural streambed habitat. Avoid sharp substrates to protect their underbellies.

Decor: Include flat rocks, slate, and driftwood arranged to create varied surfaces for clinging and hiding. Caves or crevices offer resting spots. Indian almond leaves enhance the natural, homey aesthetic.

Water Flow: Strong water movement is critical, mimicking their fast-flowing river habitat. Use a powerhead, canister filter, or air-driven sponge filter with an output of 10–20 times tank volume per hour. Position flow to create current across rocks and glass.

Community:

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 68–75°F (20–24°C); avoid temperatures above 78°F (26°C) for prolonged periods.
pH: 6.5–7.5 (neutral to slightly alkaline).

Filtration: High-flow filtration with strong oxygenation (e.g., canister filter or powerhead with sponge filter). Maintain pristine water quality, as they are sensitive to organic buildup.

Diet:
Primarily herbivorous, grazing on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms. Supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, or sinking herbivore foods.

Challenges:
Sensitive to low oxygen levels; ensure strong aeration and flow.
Shy without sufficient hiding spots or group size; keep in groups of 3+ with ample decor.
Prone to stress in warm or stagnant water; maintain cooler temperatures and high flow
