Featherfin Synodontis
Scientific Name: Synodontis eupterus
Common Names: Featherfin Synodontis, Featherfin Catfish, Lacefin Catfish
Family: Mochokidae
Origin: Africa (White Nile, Volta, Niger, and Chad river basins; shallow lakes, slow-moving rivers)
Size: 15–20 cm (6–8 inches); rarely up to 30 cm in large tanks
Lifespan: 8–15 years with proper care
Behavior: Peaceful but nocturnal, hiding during the day and active at night. Social, preferring groups of 3–5 to reduce stress, though solitary specimens adapt well. They swim upside-down occasionally, a unique trait among Synodontis species.
Single fish: Minimum 30 gallons; 55 gallons preferred for comfort.
Small group (3–5): 75–100 gallons to accommodate social behavior and reduce territoriality.
Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C); avoid prolonged exposure above 82°F (28°C).
pH: 6.5–7.8 (neutral to slightly alkaline).
Compatible with peaceful, medium-sized fish that tolerate similar conditions. Safe with larger invertebrates like Red Cherry Shrimp in well-planted tanks, though shrimplets may be eaten.
Avoid aggressive fish or those that compete for bottom space. Large predators or highly territorial species may stress them. Bottom-dwellers may compete in smaller tanks, so ensure ample space and hiding spots.
Best in species-specific tanks or with robust, non-aggressive tankmates to prevent stress.
